Service levels explained

As the owner of a motorcycle, it is your legal duty to ensure it is roadworthy and does not pose a hazard to yourself, any passengers, other road users or the general public.

A motorcycle service will ensure any mechanical or electrical problems are ironed out ahead of your MOT and of course before they affect the safe operation of your motorbike. Your motorbike may also be more efficient and more pleasant to ride when all the components are in optimum condition.

This is your basic level of service and as the name suggests it will usually be conducted yearly as a basic safety check and oil change for your motorcycle. This will often be combined with an MOT to highlight any issues for a year of riding ahead. Allowing for this service each year will give piece of mind that your motorbike has been inspected for all safety related items and combines checks to the chassis, brakes and wearable components.

Many garages also offer ‘interim checks’, which go into less detail than full services, but still ensure the vital components of your motorbike are working as they should be. As the name suggests, this service should keep your bike in good condition between full services. The service will include all items checked/replaced in the annual service, as well as checks to brake callipers, pistons, cables, levers, pivots, wheel bearings, headlights, chain function and tyre pressure, spark plugs and airfilter among others. It should also include a road test.

What constitutes a full service can vary a little from garage to garage, but in general it should be the complete inspection and replacing of all serviceable parts such as engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and a full check to all systems for wear. The big difference on this level will be the most time consuming maintenance on most motorcycles such as valve clearances and a comprehensive full fluid change, draining and bleeding systems such as coolant, brake fluid and driveshaft oil as required per model of motorcycle. This level of service can often take a few days where systems need stripping down for inspection and fuel tanks, airbox units, radiators, cylinder head covers and panel work need removing.

Smaller motorcycles and scooters are generally a lot simpler to maintain and work on than their larger counterparts, most 50cc and 125cc engines are single cylinder machines with very uncomplicated systems, most often there are no elaborate fuel, coolant or brake systems to negotiate which make for quick and easy servicing. Our service pricing reflects this.

The cost of a service depends on the size and configuration of your engine, level of service requested and the specific checks required by the manufacturer. We operate a menu pricing system that offers greater transparency and flexibility in your choice. Servicing requirements vary by manufacturer / model and this list should be used as a labour guide price only, after all, a full service on a BMW K1300RT against a Royal Enfield Classic 500 EFI will be vastly different. The K1300RT requiring a full fairing strip, cylinder cover removal with a lengthy coolant flush and the Classic 500 EFI having no radiator, a side access air filter and a side access timing cover reducing the labour time greatly. Thus, being in-line with the annual / basic service guide-price purely due to its simplicity.
